In 1990, Porsche made motorsport history by launching the Porsche Carrera Cup, where 40 identical Porsche 911 race cars competed in a thrilling display of driving skill and engineering prowess. The race cars were based on the 911 Carrera 2, but Porsche developed a dedicated Cup version in the autumn of 1989 for this event.
Stripped of unnecessary weight, the Cup version lacked rear seats, acoustic damping, and under-body protection, optimizing it for racing. However, it gained key safety features like a robust security roll cage, ensuring driver protection during the high-speed competition.
Under the hood, the largely standard 3.6-litre flat-six engine was enhanced with slightly modified ignition electronics and a revised exhaust system, boosting power output to 265 horsepower. The car’s ride was lowered by 55 millimeters, improving its handling and cornering ability on the track.
