Max Verstappen delivered a remarkable performance at the São Paulo Grand Prix, charging from 17th on the grid to claim his eighth victory of the season, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of the competition. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly secured a surprise double podium for Alpine, rounding out a dramatic race.
The race had a chaotic start when Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll crashed during the formation lap, prompting an aborted start. However, several drivers, including pole-sitter Lando Norris, pulled away from the grid, leading to another formation lap. The incident was set to be investigated post-race.
At the start, George Russell reacted quickest, seizing the lead from Norris, while Yuki Tsunoda held onto third place ahead of Esteban Ocon. Further back, Verstappen made an incredible start, charging from P17 to P11 by the first turn, then quickly advancing through the field. By lap 11, he was in sixth place, setting up an epic comeback.
Russell maintained a slim lead over Norris until lap 20, with Tsunoda holding third ahead of Ocon, Charles Leclerc, and the rapidly advancing Verstappen. The race took a twist when Nico Hülkenberg spun off, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car (VSC), triggering a round of pit stops.
The VSC reshuffled the order, promoting Ocon into the lead, followed by Verstappen and Gasly. As conditions worsened, the Safety Car was deployed after Williams’ Franco Colapinto crashed. After a brief red-flag period, the race resumed with Ocon still in the lead.
Verstappen, however, was relentless, passing Ocon on lap 42 to take the lead. From there, he dominated the race, stretching out a commanding lead. By the checkered flag, Verstappen had recorded 17 fastest laps, crossing the line well ahead of the field for his first victory since the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
Ocon and Gasly celebrated a shock double podium for Alpine, while Russell finished fourth ahead of Leclerc. Norris, despite facing a post-race investigation for his formation lap incident, finished sixth, followed by Tsunoda, Piastri, Lawson, and Hamilton.
