SGMW Heritage Driving Day: A Celebration of Classic and Modern Motoring

The Southern Group of Motoring Writers (SGMW) hosted its annual heritage day at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire, for the seventh time, and this year’s event was one to remember. The 2024 edition not only celebrated classic cars but also opened its doors to new manufacturers without heritage fleets, adding a fresh dynamic to the day.

Organized by SGMW secretary Chris Rees, the event saw 20 members joined by 29 PR representatives from 14 brands, showcasing a diverse lineup of 32 cars. Among the vehicles were 12 heritage models, alongside the latest electric vehicles, off-roaders, and pickup trucks.

Participants had the chance to drive some iconic classics, including Ford Capri L, Volvo P1800, and Mazda MX-5 Mark 1. Modern models also made an impact, with standouts like the BYD Dolphin, Genesis GV60, and Kia Stinger GT-S.

Car of the Day Awards
Attendees voted for their favorite cars, with Stu Bird’s Volkswagen Beetle Douglas Special winning the best member’s car, and Volvo’s classic P1800 securing the best manufacturer’s car. Bird’s Beetle took the spotlight with its intricate homage to the original Herbie movie car.

A Day of Connection and Driving Fun
The SGMW heritage day provided a relaxed setting for PRs and motoring journalists to connect, share stories, and test-drive each other’s cars. Simon Branney of Genesis Motor UK praised the event as a highlight of the year, while Volvo’s Tom Lynch and Mazda’s Graeme Fudge appreciated the chance to showcase heritage and exchange experiences with competitors.

Overall, the SGMW heritage driving day delivered memorable moments, from vintage classics to the latest electric innovations, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Beaulieu estate.
