The first fourth-generation BMW 1 Series, a BMW 120 in Alpine White, has rolled off the production line at BMW Group Plant Leipzig. This premium compact model, manufactured exclusively in Saxony, boasts a combined fuel consumption of 6.0 – 5.3 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 135 – 121 g/km according to WLTP standards. With the ability to produce up to 500 units per day, the plant also manufactures the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, and MINI Countryman, bringing total daily output to 1,300 vehicles. The new BMW 1 Series will officially launch in October 2024.
A New Chapter for the BMW 1 Series
The introduction of the new BMW 1 Series marks a significant milestone in BMW’s two-decade success story in the compact segment. Production began with the three-door variant at Plant Leipzig in 2007, and since then, over 1.3 million units in various versions have been produced. As of June 2024, nearly 443,000 third-generation BMW 1 Series models have been delivered to customers. Plant Director Petra Peterhänsel expressed confidence in the new model’s ability to maintain high production capacity at the plant.
Upgrades and Increased Capacity
Since 2018, BMW Group Plant Leipzig has undergone extensive upgrades to increase production capacity to 350,000 units annually, up from 250,000. The plant now manufactures four models with three different drive types from two brands on the same production line. Since November 2023, the plant has also produced the MINI Countryman, with output set to rise to 500 units per day alongside the 800 BMW vehicles. This production boost is expected to secure existing jobs and create new ones, with an additional 900 employees joining by the end of 2024, bringing the total workforce to around 7,000.
Dynamic Design and Advanced Features
The new BMW 1 Series features a dynamic design, a revised drive portfolio, and improved chassis technology, enhancing its profile as a sporty vehicle. The front end is notably flatter and lower than its predecessor, emphasizing its sporty driving appeal. The wide, forward-leaning radiator grille features innovative vertical and diagonal bars, while standard LED headlights create a distinctive “four-eyed” look. The rear apron, two-part rear lights, and black diffuser-style insert contribute to the car’s powerful appearance.
Inside, the BMW 1 Series is now completely leather-free as standard and features a redesigned cockpit with the BMW Curved Display. The optional M Sport Package and M Sport Design equipment offer additional dynamic styling options.
Innovative Paint and Customization
For the first time, the BMW 1 Series offers an optional contrast roof in high-gloss black, using a new overspray-free painting process that is more resource-efficient. The car is available in two solid colors, seven metallic finishes, and a variety of BMW Individual Special Paints.
Market Launch
The new BMW 1 Series will be available starting October 5, with Germany and Europe, particularly the UK and Italy, expected to be its strongest markets. The model’s launch is highly anticipated, reflecting BMW’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in the compact car segment.
