MG 4 crowned Car of the Year in The Car Expert Awards 2024

The MG 4 has scooped this year’s Car of the Year title at The Car Expert Awards 2024.

In addition to the overall Car of the Year 2024 crown, the all-electric MG 4 also claimed the Best Medium Car award.

This year, electric vehicles (EV) have dominated the rankings – 7 of the 12 winners are EVs, demonstrating how well they perform across a wide range of price points and vehicle categories.

The Car Expert uses the power of its unique Expert Rating Index to determine which vehicles are the best in each category. The award-winning Expert Rating Index analyses and aggregates reviews from 35 of the UK’s top automotive websites. Using a sophisticated algorithm, The Car Expert brings together thousands of individual opinions to provide an overall consensus of the UK’s automotive media.

To be eligible for The Car Expert Awards 2024, vehicles must be on sale and on UK roads before the cut-off date of November 2023.

The MG 4 secured the prestigious Car of the Year accolade in addition to the Best Medium Car. Praised for its exceptional affordability and class-leading battery range, reviews across the board were positive, with the MG 4 achieving an outstanding Expert Rating score of 81%.

Stuart Masson, Editorial Director at The Car Expert, commented on the MG 4’s success:
“The MG 4 is, quite simply, a remarkable car. It’s fully electric, with a battery range of more than 300 miles on some versions. It has a five-star safety rating. It’s very well kitted out. It comes with a seven-year warranty. And its pricing makes every other family car on the road, let alone other electric cars, look silly.

“Over the last decade, there have been two seminal cars that have shown what’s possible from electric vehicles. The first was the Tesla Model S, which showed the world how capable electric cars can be. The second is the MG 4, which is bringing electric motoring within reach of every new car buyer. The Tesla changed the car industry, but the MG 4 could create an even bigger legacy in years to come.”

The other big winner at this year’s awards was BMW, which saw three of its models taking home accolades. The BMW i5 won Best Large Car, with its class-leading infotainment system noted as a highlight. The petrol-driven BMW M2 was the winner of Best Performance Car, and the Best Luxury Car award was picked up by the BMW i7.

The Best Small Car award was collected by the Abarth 500e. It was credited for being well-equipped as standard, whilst being easy to drive, agile and engaging around town.

The winner of the Best Hot Hatch award was the Honda Civic Type R. Boasting an outstanding Expert Rating of 90%, it’s one of the highest-rated new cars on sale.

Stuart Masson commented, “If this is going to be the last petrol-powered Honda Civic Type R, then what a send-off! Many people didn’t think it was possible for Honda to improve on the previous model, but the latest Type R has raised the bar even higher.

“The new Honda Civic Type R manages to maintain the superlative driving characteristics we’ve come to know and love from anything wearing the famous red Type R badge, but adds a new level of maturity and sophistication that is shared with the entire Civic range.”

The winners of the small, medium and large SUV categories were dominated by electric vehicles. The Best Small SUV award was taken by the Hyundai Kona Electric, Best Medium SUV was won by the Genesis Electrified GV70 and Best Large SUV was the Lexus RX. All three were credited for their intuitive infotainment systems and ample range.

The Ferrari Purosangue is a performance SUV/crossover and Ferrari’s first five-door production vehicle, which, this year, claimed the new Best Luxury SUV award.

Stuart Masson said of the Ferrari Purosangue: “We know that Ferrari doesn’t like describing the Purosangue as an SUV. But, honestly, has any other vehicle ever offered both sport and utility at anything like this level? All of the usual Ferrari hallmarks are present, combining a thrilling driving experience with sublime luxury – all powered by a superb 6.5-litre V12 engine.”

The Aston Martin DB12 was this year’s winner of the Best Luxury Sports Car award, achieved through a superb blend of comfort, performance and elegance.
