Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE at the ID. Meeting in Locarno, Switzerland. This special edition was created in collaboration with BOGNER, the Munich-based luxury sports fashion brand, paying homage to the legendary 1990s Golf Fire and Ice, which gained a cult following among automotive enthusiasts. This modern reinterpretation blends exclusive design details with Volkswagen’s all-electric ID.3 GTX platform, showcasing a stunning 3-layer paint finish with a glass bead effect, luxurious interior features, and cutting-edge performance.
A Nod to the Past with Modern Flair
Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at Volkswagen, highlights the emotional impact of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE: “Our design team had incredible fun reinterpreting the iconic 90s design and developing it further for the electric era.” Inspired by the original Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, this one-off features Electric Violet pearl effect paint, which changes hues from dark blue to violet and black depending on the lighting. Flaming Red accents on the roof frame add a sporty touch, while geometric FIRE+ICE patterns and 21-inch rims enhance the dynamic exterior.
Collaboration with BOGNER
Volkswagen partnered with BOGNER, known for its FIRE+ICE fashion collection, to create a truly unique vehicle. Tom Becker, Director of BOGNER FIRE+ICE, said, “We integrated many of our original materials and accessories into the interior, bringing a modern interpretation of the iconic Fire and Ice design.” The seats, inspired by BOGNER’s down jackets, feature quilted patterns and B-zippers that reveal the original FIRE+ICE fabric from the 1990s.
Performance Meets Luxury
Under the hood, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE boasts Volkswagen’s most powerful electric motor yet, producing 240 kW (326 PS) and 545 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. Power comes from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 601 km. With fast-charging capability, the battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
A Tribute to a 90s Icon
The original Golf Mk2 Fire and Ice, launched in 1990, became a surprise success with its bold design, including dark violet pearl effect paint and a powerful engine. The collaboration with fashion designer Willy Bogner resulted in a sporty, luxurious vehicle that sold 16,700 units, far exceeding initial expectations.
The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE combines the spirit of this 90s icon with modern electric performance, making it a standout at the ID. Meeting and a symbol of Volkswagen’s innovation.
