History of the Safety Car

The first deployment was on June 30, 1996, in Magny-Cours, France, using a Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG. Since then, 13 models have served in Formula 1®, ensuring top safety standards worldwide.

The longest safety car phase was 19 laps at the 2007 Japanese Grand Prix. In 2016 São Paulo, 33 laps were completed over four separate deployments.

Current Official Safety Car

Since 2022, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series serves as the F1 Safety Car. It features a handcrafted 4.0L V8 biturbo delivering 720 hp, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds.
