Toyota Prius Breaks World Record For Fuel Efficiency

The Toyota Prius has once again set a new standard for fuel efficiency, achieving a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™ for the highest MPG during a coast-to-coast drive across the U.S. Veteran hypermiler Wayne Gerdes drove a Prius LE from Los Angeles to New York City, achieving an astounding 93.158 MPG combined—shattering the previous record, which hovered in the mid-70s MPG range.

Since its debut in 2000, the Prius has revolutionized the automotive world as the first production hybrid vehicle, blending an electric motor with a high-efficiency engine to dramatically enhance fuel economy. “The world record for the highest MPG is just one more proof point that the Prius truly is an engineering marvel,” said Michael Tripp, Toyota’s Vice President of Vehicle Marketing.

Gerdes’ record-breaking journey spanned 3,211.7 miles, taking him through diverse landscapes and challenging weather conditions, from the scorching Mojave Desert to 7,000-foot mountain elevations. Despite these challenges, the Prius maintained its remarkable efficiency.

As the 30th industry award for the latest Prius generation, this GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™ adds to an impressive list of accolades, including Car and Driver’s 10Best, MotorTrend Car of the Year, and World Car Design of the Year. The 2023 Prius, with its sleek design and advanced technology, continues to lead the way in hybrid innovation.
