Volvo Cars is celebrating a significant milestone as its factory outside Charleston, South Carolina, commences production of the new fully electric EX90 SUV. The first customer deliveries of this flagship model are slated for the second half of this year, marking a new era for the company.
A New Era in Safety and Technology
The EX90 not only expands Volvo’s portfolio of fully electric vehicles but also introduces core computing technology to the brand. This advanced technology enhances the vehicle’s safety features, setting a new standard for Volvo cars. The inaugural customer-bound EX90, finished in Denim Blue, is destined for a customer in the United States later this year.
Jim Rowan, Volvo’s Chief Executive, highlights the significance of this launch: “The fully electric Volvo EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars – a new era for safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology. The EX90 is proudly manufactured in the USA and reflects our long-term commitment to our people in South Carolina and the broader US market.”
Commitment to South Carolina
Volvo Cars’ first US manufacturing plant, located near Charleston, South Carolina, opened in the summer of 2018. Currently, the plant produces the EX90 and the S60 sedan, with a capacity to build up to 150,000 cars annually. Significant investments have been made in the facility, including expansions to the body shop and paint shop, and the addition of a state-of-the-art battery pack production line.
These enhancements ensure the facility is well-equipped for this new era, underscoring Volvo’s long-term commitment to South Carolina and the broader US market. Volvo has been operating in the United States for nearly 70 years, supported by a network of 281 dealerships across 47 states.
Born Electric and Groundbreaking
The EX90 is built on Volvo’s next-generation, born-electric EV platform, offering a fully electric range of up to 600 km. It is designed to be the safest Volvo car to date, featuring advanced passive and active safety technology supported by a comprehensive suite of sensors.
Embodying Scandinavian design principles, the EX90 boasts modern proportions that enhance safety, efficiency, and aesthetics. As a true seven-seater, it provides ample space, versatility, and comfort, making it ideal for families.
The EX90 is equipped with a powerful core system, ensuring constant connectivity and the ability to receive improvements over time through software updates. These updates, driven by AI and real-time data, highlight Volvo’s global engineering capabilities and reinforce its leadership in the evolving car industry.
