The Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace this September will showcase an extraordinary star: a one-of-a-kind Shelby Cobra ‘427 Competition’. This rare gem, the only surviving model of its kind, will be displayed alongside 60 other exceptional cars from August 30th to September 1st.
Produced in the 1960s, the Shelby Cobra combined a classic British sports car design with the power of an American V8. The featured Cobra, chassis CSX3019, stands out as one of just 19 ‘427 Competition’ models ever made. It is particularly notable for its 7.0-litre Holman-Moody NASCAR engine, producing over 500bhp, making it one of the most potent Cobras ever built.
This Cobra has a fascinating history. Ordered new by Los Angeles attorney and amateur racer Ed Freutel in 1965, it was raced across Europe in 1966. Despite a challenging racing season, including entries in the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring, it made a significant impact. Freutel’s adventures with the Cobra, and its subsequent ownership by John Woolfe, who achieved notable racing success, only add to its allure.
Following a period in the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, the car was meticulously restored by ‘Team 3019’, winning accolades for its restoration. Now in exceptional condition, it recently achieved 523bhp and 550lb/ft on the dyno, ready to impress at the Concours.
Beyond the impressive display of rare cars, the Concours of Elegance 2024 will offer a luxurious experience, featuring champagne from Charles Heidsieck, picnics by Fortnum & Mason, and displays of art, jewellery, and fashion. A. Lange & Söhne will also showcase its exquisite timepieces, adding to the event’s elegance.
