Porsche 911 Sets Record as Highest Earthbound Vehicle: A New Documentary Reveals the Full Story

A Porsche 911 driven by Romain Dumas has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the highest earthbound vehicle ever, reaching the summit of Ojos del Salado, the tallest volcano in the world. This historic accomplishment is the result of over four years of relentless effort and determination, involving three attempts with two different cars to secure one ultimate record.

The complete story behind this extraordinary journey has never been fully told—until now. The documentary, named after the Porsche 911 that set the record, captures every moment of the adventure. From the initial assembly of the car to the extreme acclimatization challenges, and the emotional and physical toll endured by the team, the film provides an unprecedented insight into one of the most grueling and remarkable records ever attempted.

Produced by independent filmmakers TangentVector and supported by Porsche, the documentary offers a raw and intimate portrayal of the journey. “For over four years we meticulously recorded every part of what transpired to be an incredible human adventure and technological achievement,” said J.F. Musial, CEO of TangentVector. “Many have tried to beat this record but very, very few have succeeded … and it became clear that there were good reasons it remained unbeaten for 16 years. This film captures the raw reality of what it takes—told by those who were there and the team who supported them.”

The film begins with the earliest stages of the adventure, documenting the creation of the first car in just a matter of weeks. Narrated by videographer Niko Myyrä, who was present for all three record attempts, the documentary features contributions from key team members including Romain Dumas and Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche AG.

The 50-minute documentary will premiere during Monterey Car Week on Friday, August 16th, at the Golden State Theater in Monterey. Limited tickets to the premiere are available here. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the record-breaking car in person and receive special memorabilia to commemorate the occasion.
