On April 29, McMurtry’s Spéirling PURE (Validation Prototype 1) achieved a record-breaking lap at Castle Combe Circuit, clocking an unprecedented 54.559 seconds. This impressive feat, performed during routine testing, eclipsed the previous record by four seconds and nearly outpaced the GT3 lap record by ten seconds.
The record-setting lap was driven by McMurtry development driver Max Chilton, who also holds the record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Castle Combe holds special significance for Chilton, as it is the same venue where he passed his racing license test in the early 2000s.
Chilton remarked, “Everyone wants bragging rights at their local circuit. Running at 80% power and with a 155mph speed limit, we’ve knocked 4 seconds off the outright track record. This demonstrates the car’s potential for our customers at their local or favourite circuits.”
The McMurtry Spéirling PURE, a hyper-track car available for global order, features a unique downforce-on-demand system that provides exceptional grip from 0mph, alongside a 1000bhp electric powertrain. It offers selectable performance modes ranging from GT3 to F1 levels.
Thomas Yates, Managing Director of McMurtry Automotive, added, “This milestone is significant. It’s not every day you see a car and driver surpass existing records by such a margin. Testing at Castle Combe for years, it was time to showcase what the car can do.”
Next, McMurtry will compete at Laguna Seca in the reverse corkscrew hillclimb on August 10-11 with the original Goodwood record-holding Spéirling and driver Max Chilton.
