One of the most iconic cars of the 80s, a 1989 Audi UR Quattro 2.2 Turbo RR 20V, is set to be a star attraction at H&H Classics’ next auction on 24 July. This classic car, with genuine pedigree and provenance, has recently undergone a thorough mechanical and cosmetic overhaul, making it a rare gem for collectors.
This particular Quattro, one of four UK press cars, is expected to fetch between £40,000-45,000. Lucas Gomersall, a motor car specialist at H&H Classics, highlights its significance: “Thanks to their motorsport success and technological advances, Audi Quattros are widely admired and still in high demand. However, with replacement parts now difficult to acquire, few examples exist today in such good condition as this one. Its factory press car heritage makes it a rare opportunity to own a true 80s icon.”
Identifiable by its consecutive registration plates, this Quattro featured in a head-to-head test alongside a Lancia Delta Integrale in the February 1990 issue of Fast Lane magazine. The journalist praised its performance, stating, “On the move, the 20V Quattro is nothing short of astonishing; it offers breathtaking performance… In short, you simply never get held up for long in this car, even on England’s overcrowded roads.”
The car’s recent rejuvenation involved significant expenditure by its enthusiastic owner, including the use of donor Audi Coupes for replacement parts and another RR 20v Quattro for its engine. The replacement engine now boasts a Turbo Dynamics MD147KKK turbocharger, three-nozzle injectors, and a Scorpion exhaust, resulting in an estimated 300 bhp. Handling this power is a new clutch, and the braking system has been upgraded with Brembo callipers on the front wheels.
In addition to mechanical improvements, the car’s bodywork received attention, including new front wings and a repaint to its original Tornado Red color, restoring its iconic look after a previous color change to black.
“This car will undoubtedly make a great addition to any collection of 1980s performance models, so we expect there to be much interest when it is offered on 24 July,” concludes Gomersall.
Quattro fans can view the car in person from midday on 23 July at the Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, ahead of the sale commencing at 1 pm the following day. For more information about this car and other classic, vintage, and performance cars being offered, or to register to bid, visit H&H Classics.
