The 1974-78 Mustang II has seen a resurgence in popularity over the past decade, and it’s no surprise given its unique place in Ford’s history. At this year’s Carlisle Ford Nationals, we encountered a striking example of this second-generation classic: Mark Oliver’s meticulously restored 1978 Mustang II Hardtop.
Mark shared the story behind his stunning ride, which he acquired in 2008. “The car was originally bought by a lady in spring 1978 and remained with her until her passing. It was then inherited by her stepbrother, who sold it a short while later,” Mark explained.
The Mustang II had been well-preserved, thanks in part to its North Carolina origins, which shielded it from the severe rust common in northern states. Despite some faded paint and a few minor dents, the car was largely rust-free, with only a minor issue with battery acid corrosion to address. Mark undertook a thorough restoration, tackling a new gas tank, battery tray repairs, and other necessary updates.
The restoration work didn’t stop at the mechanical repairs. Mark also replaced the heater core, updated the carpeting, and had the front seats reupholstered. The vinyl top was redyed, and the car was repainted in its original Light Aqua Poly color, restoring it to its former glory. “Now, it looks and drives like new, turning heads wherever it goes,” Mark said proudly.
The 1978 Mustang II Hardtop is a testament to the enduring appeal of this often-overlooked model, and Mark’s attention to detail has brought it back to life in a spectacular way.
