F1 – Norris Edges Piastri in Tight FP1 Battle at Hungarian GP

Lando Norris started his Hungarian Grand Prix weekend in style, topping the opening practice session for the 2025 Formula 1 Hungarian GP. He edged McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri by just 0.019 seconds, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc close behind in third.

McLaren set the early tone in FP1

The session began with Aston Martin’s Felipe Drugovich stepping in for Fernando Alonso, who was sidelined due to a back muscle issue. Piastri was first to set the pace on Medium tyres, before Norris jumped ahead with a rapid 1:17.631. Leclerc slotted into second, four tenths off the Briton’s time.

Track conditions improved quickly, with Alex Albon briefly taking P2 for Williams before Norris stretched his advantage to 1:16.837. Leclerc responded with a 1:16.791 on Soft tyres, but the McLaren driver soon reclaimed top spot.

Norris edges Piastri in close fight

Norris’s final push on the Soft compound yielded a 1:16.052, putting him seven tenths clear of Leclerc at the time. Piastri came close on his second flying lap, clocking a 1:16.071 to finish a mere 0.019 seconds behind his team-mate.

Behind the leading trio, Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar impressed with fourth, followed by Lewis Hamilton in fifth for Ferrari. Haas rookie Oliver Bearman continued his strong form in sixth, with both Mercedes cars in seventh and eighth. Max Verstappen had to settle for ninth after the Soft tyre runs, ahead of Lance Stroll in tenth.
