Ariel E-Nomad Concept: The Future of All-Terrain Electric Sportscars

Ariel Motor Company, the renowned UK-based manufacturer of ultra-lightweight road, track, and off-road vehicles, has unveiled the E-Nomad concept—a fully-electric version of its iconic go-anywhere sportscar.

The E-Nomad matches the acceleration of its petrol-powered sibling, reaching 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds while retaining the Nomad’s high-performance off-road capabilities. Weighing only 896 kg, it features new natural fibre bio-composite bodywork, which is recyclable and enhances aerodynamic efficiency, allowing for a range of up to 150 miles (240 km).

Developed at Ariel’s headquarters in Somerset, the E-Nomad is based on the recently launched Nomad 2. It’s powered by a 41 kWh 450-volt battery paired with a rear integrated motor, gearbox, and inverter unit, delivering a maximum output of 210 kW (281 bhp) and 490 Nm of torque. The E-Nomad offers both on-road agility and off-road stability, embodying Ariel’s commitment to delivering serious fun with a clean energy twist.

Ariel Director Simon Saunders remarked, “The E-Nomad concept, while still in development, hints at Ariel’s future direction. We are eager to gauge customer feedback as we continue our rigorous testing process.”

Developed in collaboration with Rockfort Engineering and Bamd Composites, the E-Nomad is part of Ariel’s ‘Zero Emission for Low Volume’ programme, supported by the UK’s Department of Trade. The vehicle showcases cutting-edge technology designed for low-volume production and sustainable innovation.

Key features include the lightweight battery unit with integrated cooling and heating systems, a single-speed gearbox with a limited-slip differential, and recyclable bio-composite bodywork that offers a significant CO2 reduction compared to traditional carbon fibre. The E-Nomad also introduces Ariel’s new ABS system with regenerative braking and driver-selectable on- and off-road modes.

The E-Nomad will debut at the Cenex Expo 2024 on September 4 at UTAC Millbrook. While not yet available for purchase, Ariel plans to monitor consumer reactions and continue testing to inform future developments.
