The first signs of pace for the Singapore GP 2025 came with Fernando Alonso taking the top spot in opening practice. The Aston Martin driver clocked a best time of 1:31.116, staying just ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Alonso Shows Early Form at Marina Bay
The daylight session at the Marina Bay Street Circuit began with low grip and plenty of lock-ups. Conditions made it tricky, and Williams struggled further when Alex Albon’s car caught fire with brake issues. His session ended after only two laps.
As track grip improved, the times dropped. Alonso was an early contender with a lap of 1:32.592 on medium tyres. McLaren’s Lando Norris briefly moved ahead, but the Spaniard reclaimed the top spot with a 1:32.054. Williams driver Carlos Sainz then impressed with a 1:31.812 on medium tyres before the leading pack switched to soft compounds.
Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren Push the Limits
Once the softer Pirelli tyres came into play, Leclerc set the benchmark at 1:31.266. Norris and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri came close, but neither surpassed the Ferrari driver. Verstappen also fell short. That left Alonso to deliver the decisive lap, shaving the time down to 1:31.117, then improving marginally to 1:31.116.
Leclerc finished 0.150 seconds behind, with Verstappen 0.276 back. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was fourth, narrowly ahead of Piastri. Norris settled for sixth, followed by Racing Bulls’ rookie Isack Hadjar, who impressed in his first Marina Bay outing.
Singapore GP 2025 Performance Highlights
Alonso’s best lap of 1:31.116 translated to an average speed of 194.666 km/h. The close gaps between the top six suggest a competitive weekend ahead. Leclerc and Verstappen showed strong pace on soft tyres, while Hamilton’s Ferrari kept them honest in fourth place.
Rookie Hadjar managed seventh, Sainz took eighth on medium tyres, and Yuki Tsunoda placed ninth. Haas secured a top ten spot with Esteban Ocon in P10, while George Russell missed the cut in 11th.
