Celebrating Two Legends: 50 Years of Porsche Turbo and the Transfăgărășan Highway

In 2024, two iconic anniversaries converge: 50 years of the Porsche Turbo and the golden anniversary of the Transfăgărășan Highway, often heralded as the best driving road in the world. To mark these twin milestones, Porsche hosted an extraordinary event, uniting the power and legacy of its Turbo models with the breathtaking beauty of this legendary mountain pass.

The Transfăgărășan: A Driving Dream
Nestled in the southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania, the 91-kilometer Transfăgărășan Highway—often called “The Great Dragon”—is celebrated for its sweeping curves, dramatic elevation changes, and panoramic views. Originally built between 1970 and 1974 for military purposes, this stunning route is now hailed by enthusiasts as the ultimate driving road. Its winding path and picturesque landscapes provide the perfect setting for a spirited drive, especially in a Porsche.

The highway’s 50th anniversary coincided with a landmark in automotive history: the 50th birthday of Porsche’s Turbo designation, a badge that has graced some of the most iconic sports cars ever made. To celebrate, Porsche Central Eastern Europe brought together 60 journalists from 16 countries for an unforgettable weeklong event from 4–11 September 2024.

A Turbocharged Celebration
Journalists had the opportunity to experience a fleet of Turbo models, both classic and modern, as they navigated the Transfăgărășan’s challenging terrain. Among the models were the cutting-edge Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid with GT Package, along with the celebrated 992-generation 911 Turbo S. Porsche also unleashed Turbo icons from its museum, including the 930-generation 911 Turbo 3.3, the 964-generation 911 Turbo 3.6, and the 993-generation 911 Turbo S—each representing a chapter in the evolution of turbocharged performance.

House of Turbo
At the heart of the event was Hotel Castelnor, transformed into the “House of Turbo” for 10 days. The venue hosted an immersive display of Porsche’s rich Turbo history, including the rare 991 Turbo S Exclusive Series and a variety of Porsche Museum exhibits. Guests could explore the evolution of Turbo technology through meticulously curated displays, from cutaway models of the 997-generation 911’s twin-charged engine to various Turbo memorabilia. This deep dive into the past, present, and future of Porsche’s Turbo legacy created an unforgettable atmosphere.

An Unparalleled Driving Experience
With over 300 kilometers of scenic roads ahead, Porsche’s guests took on the Transfăgărășan, guided by Porsche instructors and supported by the brand’s legendary engineering. The route covered over 160 corners, five tunnels, and countless bridges—all set against the backdrop of the Carpathian wilderness. Among the highlights were encounters with curious brown bears, adding to the unique charm of the adventure.

Venceslas Monzini, Head of Public Relations for Porsche Central and Eastern Europe, summed up the experience: “The Transfăgărășan is one of the most spectacular and thrilling roads in the world, perfect for driving the models that created the Porsche Turbo legend. The endless sequence of curves and climbs is where turbocharged engines truly come to life.”

A Fitting Tribute
The combination of the world’s best driving road and Porsche’s most iconic Turbo models made this event a celebration of engineering, history, and driving passion. As the journalists experienced the exhilarating performance and unmatched power of these legendary cars, they also paid tribute to the lasting impact of the Turbo badge—and the breathtaking road that showcased its capabilities.
