Scheduled to take place from September 27-29, 2024, this exclusive automotive concours has announced an extraordinary lineup of pre-1973 automobiles, each selected for its historical significance, design excellence, and impeccable engineering.
The prestigious event, set against the stunning backdrop of Palazzo di Varignana in the Bolognese Hills, will feature 30 handpicked automobiles. These vehicles, representing pivotal moments in automotive history, have been carefully curated by a panel of esteemed global automotive experts. The panel’s rigorous selection process focused on each car’s design values, provenance, and engineering excellence.
Among the distinguished panel of judges for the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Varignana 1705 are Stefano Pasini, President of the Jury and renowned author; Stephen Bayley, architect and writer; Alessandra Giorgetti, Vice President of Registro Internazionale Touring Superleggera; François Melcion, Director of Retromobile Paris; Gianni Mercatali, luxury communications leader; Lorenzo Ramaciotti, former Group Chief of Design at Fiat Group Automobiles; and Peter Read, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club’s Motoring Committee. This year’s lineup includes several extraordinary vehicles, such as the 1914 Benz 8/20PS Jadewagen, brought by Silvia Nicolis from the Nicolis Museum. This car, originally ordered by an Indian Maharaja, features a coach-built body by Schebera, a renowned company from Heilbronn near Stuttgart.
Also returning to the event is the Lopresto family, who won Best in Show last year with their 1947 Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa Coupe Touring. This rare car, one of only five prototypes built between 1947 and 1959, was fully restored in 2017 and remains a testament to the enduring legacy of the Isotta Fraschini brand.
A highlight of this year’s Concorso will be the appearance of the Auto Avio Costruzioni 815, considered by many to be the “first” Ferrari, though not in name due to legal constraints placed on Enzo Ferrari after leaving Alfa Romeo in 1939. This rare automobile, now part of Mario Righini’s collection, will be honored with a special class of one – FuoriConcorso.
The event will also showcase the 1966 Lamborghini Miura prototype, a model that marked the dawn of the supercar era. Brought by German collector Dr. Gebhard, this Miura is joined by a 1970 Lamborghini Miura S with a fascinating history, including multiple repaints and its role as a testbed for Lamborghini’s early marketing strategies.
Further adding to the event’s allure is the 1972 De Tomaso Pantera Group 4 competition car, which won the Italian GT Championship and the Giro Automobilistico d’Italia in 1973 under the skilled hands of Mario Casoni. The car continues to race in historic events, maintained by its current owner, Pietro Silva.
The Concorso will also feature a 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Turismo with bodywork by London-based coachbuilder James Young Limited, presented in pristine condition despite its regular participation in grueling long-distance rallies such as the 1000 Miglia Experience UAE.
In addition to these automotive masterpieces, the event will welcome back Hidetomo Kimura from Japan, who will present his 1950 Fiat 1100 Ghia. Other notable entries include a 1966 Ferrari 330 GTC, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB4, a Maserati 3500 Vignale Spyder, a Mercedes 300 SL Roadster, a Bugatti Type 35, and a 1925 Bentley 3-Litre.
Making his debut at the Concorso is Alessandro Squarzi, a world-renowned style and fashion influencer, who will display his 1955 Porsche Speedster. The lineup of Porsche vehicles also includes a 1955 Porsche Speedster Pre-A and a 1973 Carrera RS 2.7.
