The McMurtry Spéirling electric fan car has made a spectacular debut in the US, claiming two new records and maintaining its perfect competition win rate at the Laguna Seca Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb on August 11th. This high-performance track car, driven by former F1 and Indycar driver Max Chilton, also holds the outright record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Laguna Seca event, part of the Monterey Motorsports Pre-Reunion, marked McMurtry’s US dynamic debut. The car’s impressive performance was showcased through its record-breaking runs. The Spéirling achieved a remarkable 28.6 seconds on the longer layout, surpassing the previous record of 34.69 seconds set by a 1976 Lotus Type 77 Formula One car. This six-second advantage was made possible by the McMurtry Spéirling’s fan downforce system and its 1000bhp electric powertrain.
On the revised shorter layout, introduced for 2024, the Spéirling set a new record with a time of 21.958 seconds. The top three included a 1967 Ford Falcon race car in second place with 29.004 seconds and a 2022 Ferrari SF90 in third place with 29.822 seconds.
In the coming weeks, McMurtry will focus on private customer test drives and public showcases, including:
- Motorlux Party at the Monterey Jet Centre, August 14th, 17:00-22:00
- The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, August 16th, 09:00-16:00
- Laguna Seca Full Circuit Demo Laps, August 17th, 11:50-12:00
- L’Auberge Carmel, August 18th, 09:00-22:00
The Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb, featuring a unique route using the Corkscrew corner and turns 11, 10, and 9 in reverse, was inspired by the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The McMurtry Spéirling’s fan system generates 4,400 pounds of downforce from 0 mph, ensuring exceptional dynamic performance. Its advanced P50B battery cells allow for 20 minutes of track running at GT3 pace, with quick recharging.
Max Chilton remarked, “The Corkscrew is one of the most famous corners in the world. In the reverse hillclimb, the unsighted exit adds to the challenge. Fortunately, the fan downforce kept me securely on the ground. Setting a record here has been a special experience.”
The McMurtry Spéirling PURE, an even more capable track car, is now available to order. It features the same downforce-on-demand system and a 1,000bhp electric powertrain with selectable performance modes from GT3 to F1 and Indycar levels.
McMurtry Managing Director Thomas Yates stated, “The Reverse Corkscrew Hillclimb has been an exciting way to showcase our cars in the US. The enthusiasm here at Laguna Seca has been incredible, and we look forward to more McMurtry events in the US in the future.”
