Bermuda is known for its pink sandy beaches, iconic shorts, and mysterious triangles, but it’s not typically associated with the automotive scene. However, that didn’t stop performance enthusiasts Eugene Bothello and Patty Merritt from showcasing their stunning 1959 Chevrolet Impala at this year’s Goodguys Summit Racing Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.
A Unique Build
Built by BBT Fabrications in Mahomet, Illinois, the 1959 Impala sported a bare-metal look, giving it a true classic hot rod vibe. However, under the hood, it featured a modern Chevrolet Performance LT1 crate engine, making it a standout contender in Goodguys’ Street Machine of the Year competition.
“I was always interested in the ‘59 because of its rarity,” Bothello explained. “It was a single-year production car. I wanted to do something different, more of a hot rod, but with a ‘59 Impala.”
The Journey
Bothello found BBT proprietor Troy Gudgel online after an extensive search for a shop capable of bringing his vision to life. The car, which will eventually be painted Twilight Blue with black chrome, will be stored at the home of the couple’s son on the east coast of the United States. Bothello and Merritt, who live in Hamilton, Bermuda, also own an LT1-powered 1952 Pontiac Chieftain restomod kept in Boston.
Challenges of Bermuda
Due to size restrictions on vehicles in Bermuda, which favor smaller European models, Bothello and Merritt come Stateside to enjoy their larger American cars. Despite the lack of a significant automotive culture on the island, the couple are long-time enthusiasts.
The LT1 Choice
Bothello chose the LT1 engine for its modern capabilities and reliable performance. The LT1 crate engine, first appearing in the 2014 Corvette, features direct injection and continuously variable valve timing to improve efficiency and power.
“It’s got great power, great reliability,” Bothello said. “That’s what we’re looking for in this vehicle. We’re not looking to build a super powerful, 1000-horsepower car.”
Detailed Craftsmanship
Gudgel and his team at BBT Fabrications meticulously worked on the Impala, improving trim and fitment throughout the body and showcasing their metalwork in the bare-metal state. The car rides on a Roadster Shop REVO chassis with modern suspension components and features custom one-off Forgeline Motorsports wheels.
The Impala’s interior, built out of aluminum and wrapped in leather, includes modern amenities like Vintage Air air-conditioning and Dakota Digital gauges. The vehicle’s personality shines through, a testament to the craftsmanship and creativity of its builders.
