Ford Capri Reborn as a Coupe SUV

Ford has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, resurrecting the iconic Capri name for a modern coupe SUV based on the Volkswagen MEB platform, also used in models like the ID.4 and ID.5. Drawing inspiration from the classic 1969-1986 Capri coupe, this new offering combines sporty aesthetics with electric performance.

The new Ford Capri SUV shares its platform and a 2,770 mm wheelbase with the Explorer, albeit with a distinct fastback design that sacrifices some interior space for a sleeker profile. Ford’s design team infused nostalgic elements from the original Capri, such as a distinctive black grille band reminiscent of its predecessor and quad-headlight-inspired DRLs at each corner.

Inside, the Capri borrows heavily from the Explorer, featuring a large 14.6-inch portrait infotainment screen and retro-inspired details like a sports steering wheel design reminiscent of classic Capri models. The vehicle offers up to 390 miles (627 km) of range with a 282 hp model, while a twin-motor version provides 335 hp and slightly faster charging capabilities.

Standard features include dual-zone climate control, heated 12-way massage seats, wireless phone charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Opting for the Premium trim adds a 10-speaker B&O sound system, Matrix LED lights, and other luxury upgrades, albeit with a slight range trade-off.

Ford plans to produce the Capri in its Cologne, Germany plant, with no current plans for North American exportation due to updated EV tax credit regulations. This decision contrasts with the Capri coupe’s brief stint in the US market from 1970 to 1978. Meanwhile, the Capri enters a competitive European market alongside the Mustang Mach-E, offering a compelling alternative with its unique blend of heritage-inspired design and modern electric performance.

While pricing details are yet to be announced, the Capri is expected to align closely with the Explorer’s price range, starting around £45,875 ($58,750) in the UK for the base model. As enthusiasts debate Ford’s revival of the Capri name and its positioning alongside the Mustang Mach-E, one thing remains clear – the Capri SUV aims to carve its niche by blending nostalgic charm with cutting-edge electric technology.
