The ‘woody’ bodied vehicles of the early part of the 20th century, were actually the forerunner to the modern and popular station wagons of the ‘40s, through the ‘60s. The original ‘depot hack‘ was used to transport passengers from the train station to the local hotel, or to other means of ground transportation. Over time the term station wagon replaced depot hack. To this very day, modern auto manufacturers still emulate the custom bodied ‘depot hack’ by offering a variety of body configurations (Delivery, Ambulance, Utility, etc).
