1968 Iso Grifo GL Series I: A Masterpiece of Restoration and Performance

The 1968 Iso Grifo GL Series I presented here is a striking example of classic Italian engineering, originally delivered to Dutch real estate mogul Maurits Caransa. Known for his dramatic kidnapping and $4 million ransom negotiation in 1977, Caransa’s Grifo was delivered in its original white with a black interior, featuring a 327-cubic-inch engine, automatic transmission, and factory air conditioning. Remarkably, it was one of only six Grifos equipped with the rare Pavesi sunroof, characterized by dual removable panels creating an “enclosed T-top” effect.

In the early 2000s, the car was entrusted to the renowned marque specialists Roberto and Federico Negri, who undertook a meticulous restoration, transforming the Grifo to its current bright Giallo finish. This restoration included an upgrade to the ultimate “7-Litri” specification, featuring a period-correct 427-cubic-inch V-8 engine and a new automatic transmission. The car was also fitted with ventilated disc brakes, power steering, and the distinctive “penthouse” hood of the 7-Litri. The restoration process was comprehensive, with the front and rear body clips, doors, and hood all restored alongside the chassis, completed in 2005 at a reported cost exceeding €200,000.

In 2015, the car joined the esteemed Elkhart Collection in Indiana, where it received further enhancements, including a new butterscotch-hued leather interior. It was driven enthusiastically on the 2016 Copperstate 1000, outperforming Shelby GT350s in straight-line speed. Angus Mitchell acquired the car at RM Sotheby’s 2020 sale of the Elkhart Collection and continued to enjoy it at various cars-and-coffee events and other gatherings. Under his ownership, the car remained in excellent condition, with a dashboard recovered to reduce reflection. A bottle of iconic Paul Mitchell shampoo accompanies the sale as a quirky nod to the car’s history.

Well-suited for vintage rallies, this Iso Grifo GL Series I combines exceptional restoration quality with remarkable performance. It stands as one of the best-prepared Iso Grifos available today, cherished for its driving enjoyment and esteemed by collectors who appreciate its power and style.
