1950s Sports Racers Shine at Concours of Elegance 2024

The Concours of Elegance is thrilled to announce a celebration of the golden age of sports car racing with a display of highly significant 1950s competition machinery. Legendary racing cars from storied marques such as Ferrari, Jaguar, and Lagonda will grace the stunning grounds of Hampton Court Palace from August 30th to September 1st for the 13th edition of Europe’s premier concours d’elegance event. Among the display of over 60 of the rarest and most significant motor cars, the following sports cars will be highlighted.

1953 Le Mans Winning Jaguar C-type

Leading the display is the 1953 Le Mans winning Jaguar C-type, arguably the most significant sports racing car of the 1950s. The C-type, designed for competition, combined running gear from the XK120 road car with a lightweight tubular spaceframe chassis and an aerodynamic aluminium body designed by Jaguar Chief Engineer William Heynes. The car, chassis XKC 051, driven to victory by Tony Rolt and Duncan Hamilton, was one of three lightweight C-types built by Jaguar for the 1953 Le Mans 24 hours. This car averaged 105.87mph over the race distance, becoming the first to breach the 100mph barrier, and covered over 2500 miles during the race.

1956 Jaguar D-type

The show will also feature a Jaguar D-type with a colorful history. The D-type, following the C-type in Jaguar’s competition lineage, will be represented by XKD518, one of the few D-types finished in red. Initially purchased by racer Peter Blond from Bernie Ecclestone, the car competed in events across the UK before being owned by Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant and later exported to the USA. After a sympathetic restoration, it now stands as one of the few D-types with a complete ownership history.

Lagonda V12 DP115 Racers

Appearing together for the first time in the UK following a full restoration, the Lagonda DP115 racers, created by Aston Martin and Lagonda boss David Brown to rival Ferrari, will also be on display. These cars featured a newly developed 4.5-litre V12 engine, producing over 280bhp, and were based on the Aston Martin DB3S chassis. Despite their power, they saw limited success on track due to handling issues.

1954 Ferrari Monza 250 Sport Barchetta by Scaglietti

The lineup will include a rare Ferrari, the 1954 250 Monza Sport Barchetta by Scaglietti. One of only four produced and the only one with a Scaglietti body, chassis 0442M has a rich racing history, including a 5th overall finish at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana. Recently restored by Ferrari Classiche, this car presents in sensational condition and will be a highlight of the show.

1959 Ferrari Dino 196 S Spider

Another exceptionally rare Ferrari, the 1959 196 S ‘Dino’ Spider, will also be featured. Powered by a 2-litre, twin-cam ‘Dino’ V6 engine, chassis 0776 was delivered to Luigi Chinetti in New York and raced by Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez. The car has a complete history and has been owned by some of the world’s most prominent collectors.

The display of 1950s sports racing cars will star alongside 60 other concours cars from leading private collections worldwide. The event will also feature special displays such as the Levitt Concours, dedicated to passionate female owners, the 30UNDER30 for young enthusiasts, and the Club Trophy for the best models from national car clubs. Beyond the automotive displays, the Concours of Elegance 2024 will offer pure luxury with champagne from Charles Heidsieck, picnics by Fortnum & Mason, and showcases of art, jewellery, and fashion, with A. Lange & Söhne presenting intricate timepieces.
